THEY’RE still counting the cash at Bransford Golf Club after staging a special competition in support of Children in Need.

Unfortunately, the seniors’ stableford event on the following day, also in aid of the charity, fell foul of the weather but has now been rescheduled.

All of which means there is still money to come in but the organisers are confident that the total is over the £500 mark from Sunday’s competition and club raffle.

A total of 16 three-member teams took part in the stableford-based competition in which a special Pudsey ball was used with the points counting double.

Club vice-captain Eliot Payne, together with Mitch Fowles and Chris Eyers, took first spot with 120 points as they just managed to pip club captain Steve Bourne, Graham Thomas and Pete Anthony, who finished runners-up with 118.

It was a close finish as the third and fourth-placed teams scored 117 and 116 points respectively.

This month’s wet weather meant heavy overnight rain created difficult course conditions for the 46 members who competed in the seniors’ November stableford.

Graham Wilks (17) just edged out Bob McGrath to come out on top in Division One with a return of 35 against McGrath’s 34.

Just a further point behind were Rob Blake (14) and Roy Williams (19).

Brian Taylor (21) finished three points clear of Ken Jones (22) in Division Two with a total of 36. Jones’ 33 was one better than John Knowles (23).

Elsewhere, scoring was good and competition fierce in the first round of The Worcestershire Golf Club’s winter four-ball series, which saw a narrow win for the pairing of Mike Hanna and Bill Thomas.

Each playing off a handicap of 12, they carded 43 stableford points, just edging out Nick Smith (handicap 5) and Phil Shurmer (3) on the back six holes.

Four pairs returned scores of 42, with Terry Lloyd (10) and Stan Jones (9) securing third place from Andy McCabe (5) and new member, Simon Hart (20), Neil Bogart (11) and Pat McIlroy (15) and Jerry Hibbert (22) and John Whitehead (14).

The first two pairings qualify for the end-of-season match-play element of the competition.

Needing to win away at Sapey in the final 'A' team league match of the season, Worcestershire men just came up short and failed to retain the title, losing 3½ to 2½ to finish runners-up.

There were wins for the ever reliable pairing of Gerald Bird (6) and Paul Wakely (10) who won 3&2, and Andy McCabe (5) and Tom Howells (2) 2&1. There was a half for Lee Whittall (6) and Steve Lane (+2).
