EVESHAM’S Carl Saidler moved to the top of the Worcestershire rankings with victory in the latest one-day county tournament.

Saidler, county champion in 2013, defeated fellow Vale cueman Dean Powell 3-2 in the final at Kidderminster’s Pockets Club to move to the summit ahead of Bewdley’s Andy Smith with two of four events played.

Ten players entered this month’s competition, with Saidler defeating Kidderminster’s Taylor Fish and Stratford’s Tony Baylis 3-1 to reach the final.

Powell got the better of Evesham’s Joe Cockerton and Andrew Barklam of Hodge Hill 3-0 to secure his place.

In the final, Powell led 2-1 and had opportunities in the next frame to claim a notable scalp, but Saidler eventually eased level before a brace of 30 breaks in the decider saw him prevail.

Cockerton won the plate final with a 2-0 victory over Fish, while Malvern’s Jon Lewis’ 58 was the top break on the day.

Organiser and veteran billiards player John Smith made a 54 break in his first round defeat to Cockerton.
