EVESHAM United extended their unbeaten run to 10 games in Evo-Stik Southern League Division One South and West despite being held to a goalless draw by play-off hopefuls Yate Town.

The result ended a run of eight straight wins for the Robins but another clean sheet made it seven in nine games for Paul Collicutt’s side.

United remain in fifth spot but edged closer to sides above them with Stratford and Didcot both losing, while Merthyr had their trip to North Leigh postponed because of a waterlogged pitch.

A gale-force wind at the Jubilee Stadium made life difficult for both sides and, with Yate content to sit deep, Evesham were unable to make the breakthrough.

But the first opportunities of an even first-half fell to Yate’s Jake Cox, who fired a long-range effort wide, and top-scorer Jordan Rogers as he landed a header on the roof of Kevin Sawyer’s net.

George Washbourne used his pace down the left to create a few openings for United but nobody was on hand to apply the finishing touch.

Evesham went closer before half-time when Adam Mann, under pressure from Cox, just failed to turn in Sean Wood’s free-kick at the far post.

The Robins grew more into the game in the second period, dominating possession and looking more likely to score.

Mann could not turn Washbourne’s delivery on target and, after a period of pressure, Yate keeper Martin Horsell saved well from busy midfielder Nick Stanley.

The visitors occasionally looked dangerous on the counter-attack and went close when Charlie Hitching’s header brushed the crossbar.

Back came Evesham and Mann’s overhead kick flew inches over before the on-loan Gloucester City forward cannoned a shot against the post after showing neat skills with Horsell rooted to his line.

United sub Marcus Jackson sent over a succession of teasing crosses and, despite a late flurry of corners, Yate’s packed defence weathered the storm to deny the Robins maximum points for the first time since November 29.

Evesham: Sawyer, Wood, Wellon, Harding, Sysum, Dovey, Brown (Jackson 45), Stanley (Knowles 81), Smith (Edenborough 68), Mann, Washbourne. Subs not used: Wilson.
