GOLFER Ollie Farr will be competing on the biggest stage of his life later this month at the US Open in Washington.

The Worcester Golf and Country Club member will be joined by his dad Graham at the global event with the world’s top golfers.

The 27-year-old is currently preparing for one of golf ’s major competitions by playing in the European Tour Nordea Masters at the PGA Sweden National.

“It’s a surreal feeling for Ollie and he is very excited about the US Open,” said dad Graham, who is the professional at Boughton Park and coaches his son.

“I was lucky enough to play in two British Opens and I had a spell as caddie for KJ Choi on the PGA Tour — but I never played at the US Open.

“Getting to the US Open is something Ollie has always dreamed about. Hopefully, he will be able to get there several times — not just once.

“It’s important he enjoys the moment and makes sure he keeps his European Tour card for next season.”

The first round of the 115th US Open gets under way at Chambers Bay Golf Course on June 18.

Germany’s Martin Kaymer won last year’s competition by eight strokes from Erik Compton and Rickie Fowler at Pinehurst No. 2 in North Carolina.

Farr was initially a first reserve for the US Open after playing 36 holes in the qualifier at Walton Heath and tying with four others in eighth place.

With only 11 qualifying places up for grabs, Farr was involved in a five-man sudden-death play-off and was eliminated after bogeying the second extra hole.

However, after an international qualifier pulled out, Farr was called into the 156-strong field for the US Open.

The news made up for Farr’s disappointment at having missed the cut in the Irish Open at Royal County Down.

Farr, who grew up in Tenbury Wells, has been in good form, playing superbly to finish joint 27th in the BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth to earn a career-best €43,750.

Dad Graham said: “Ollie was going to be playing in Austria next week but has changed his plans because we are flying out on June 14.

"If Ollie finishes in the top 10 at the US Open, which he is capable of, he would go a long way to retaining his place on the European Order of Merit.”

He added: “There is a huge buzz and excitement around the golf club at the moment and also at Ludlow where he is a former champion.

“Ollie loved it when Worcester Warriors clinched promotion to the Premiership last week and one of his mates, Chris Pennell, scored the try at the end.

“That sort of thing motivates Ollie and makes him work even harder to be successful in his sport.”
