THIRTEEN-year-old Toby Turner produced a superb all-round performance for Evesham thirds.

Turner, who has just finished at St Egwin’s Middle School, snapped up 5-19 from 6.1 overs and top-scored for Evesham with 70 in a four-wicket home triumph against Droitwich fourths.

The youngster, who lives in Harvington, took the man-of-the-match honours in the Worcestershire League Division Seven South clash.

Turner was joined at the crease by his father David, who hit a quick-fire 46 in the closing overs of the match.

The schoolboy’s efforts have earned him the accolade of Worcester News player of the week and he wins a £25 Fearnley Factory Shop voucher.

Proud father David said: “I have played a fair amount of cricket and I don’t recall producing an all-round display like the one Toby achieved.

“Toby loves playing sport — he plays county rugby, captains Littleton’s under 13s football team and enjoys golf.

“He has scored three 50s this year, two of those were in youth cricket, and this was his best score in senior cricket. He has benefited from district and county training and I have got a lot of admiration for what they are doing.”

He added: “My ambition is to play in the same cricket team as my three sons.

My other two sons are also budding young cricketers, aged seven and five years old.”

Turner’s five-wicket haul was backed up by Joe Nishigaki’s 4-43 and five catches from wicketkeeper Rob Haines as Droitwich were dismissed for 223.

In reply, Evesham were reduced to 23-2 before Turner joined Jack Haines with the latter eventually departing for 68.

With 101 runs still needed from the last 18 overs, the youngster joined forces with his dad.

Turner senior put the visiting bowling attack to the sword, hitting the ball into the allotments on several occasions until he was caught for 46 off 27 deliveries.

His son, who captains Evesham under 13s, reached his half-century but, with victory in sight, was run-out for 70.

Despite losing another wicket, Evesham claimed victory in the 43rd over.

Evesham captain Nick Rowland said: “One of the aims of our third team is to give some of the juniors at the club a chance to play senior cricket.

“We have had some comprehensive defeats this summer and some good wins against teams who are similar to us. Toby opened the bowling against Droitwich and came back later in their innings to finish them off.

“Toby then batted at number four and showed maturity beyond his years to anchor the innings after arriving at the crease early on. He was definitely the man of the match.”
