EVESHAM United started the Evo-Stik Southern League Division One South and West season in disappointing fashion with a 1-0 home defeat against Yate Town.

The visitors, who finished sixth in the league in 2014-15, won with a goal in the 77th minute through substitute George Box.

Last season's beaten play-off semi-finalists Evesham had the better possession in the opening period before Yate increasingly became threatening.

The best chance for the home side was in the 42nd minute when Carl Brown’s shot went straight at the keeper.

In the 74th minute, a Matt Sysum shot was saved by the trailing leg of keeper Martin Horsell.

It was three minutes later when Yate grabbed the winner in a game when a draw would have been a fair result on the balance of play.

Evesham: Sawyer, Washbourne, Wellon, Williams, Sysum, Dovey, Wilson (Harding 63), Stanley (Green 71) , Edenborough (Mann 54), Brown, Lee Smith. Subs not used: Wood, Slack.

Attendance: 221.
