REDDITCH United manager Liam McDonald is being linked with the vacant managerial role at struggling Kidderminster Harriers.

Football development director Colin Gordon is expected to remain in charge of first-team affairs for Harriers’ long trip to Barrow on Saturday (3pm).

Former boss Gary Whild and coach Tim Flowers left Aggborough this week despite the former England goalkeeper being offered the head coach’s role.

Harriers are bottom of the Vanarama National League and still chasing their first league win after Tuesday’s 3-2 loss at Bromley.

Chairman Rod Brown insists the club are looking for a head coach to work with the club’s younger players.

With finances tight, a new manager will not be able to draft in a host of new faces.

Cardiff City Under-21 coach Kevin Nicholson has also been linked with the job which has already attracted more than 20 applications.

McDonald has guided Redditch to third in the Evo-Stik Southern League Premier Division after a 10th-placed finish last term.

The former Redditch, Tamworth and Kettering Town player is also a youth coach and has helped the Reds to lift the Worcestershire Senior Cup.

Harriers had initially set a deadline for the new appointment by the next home game — against Welling United on October 3.

Brown has ruled out former Mansfield and Torquay boss Paul Cox as a possible replacement.

Brown said: “The most important thing is the long- term future and stability of the club.

“We don’t have a lot of money, so there’s no point bring - ing in a manager who will want to make changes.

“It’s important to work with and develop the young players we have at the club and also in the academy as well because I firmly believe that is where the future of the club is. We’ve had 25 applications already.”

Gordon does not want the first-team role on a permanent basis but was pleased with Harriers’ display at Bromley. Jordan Jones bagged a brace on his first league start.

“I was delighted for half-an-hour, we were in control of the game,” said Gordon.
