DROITWICH Rugby Club notched up their first win of the season in Midlands Two West (South) as they stunned early pacesetters Nuneaton Old Edwardians 18-13 at home.

Second-half tries for Ben Rean and Dave Oliver settled a tight game at the Glyn Mitchell Memorial Ground.

Nuneaton started powerfully and produced a number of powerful scrums.

But the hosts held out and number eight Dave Edwards powered over from a close-range scrum after picking up from the base of the set-piece.

The away side were quick to hit back and scored two quick tries and a penalty to take a deserved 13-5 lead.

On the stroke of half-time, great work on the ground from James Thomas resulted in Droitwich being awarded a penalty.

Oliver slotted the kick to make the score 13-8 to Nuneaton at the break.

Nuneaton started the second period strongly but Spa defended resolutely with some tough tackling.

Droitwich then took the lead after Oliver charged down a clearance and gathered himself to touch down.

Good hands through the backs then created space for debutant Joe Melfah to feed Rean and he galloped in at the corner.

The Warwickshire outfit then pushed for another score but the outstanding home defence stood firm to close out the victory and secure a hard victory.

Fourth-from-bottom Spa’s next league fixture is a trip to Pinley on Saturday, October 10.
