WORCESTER City joint manager Carl Heeley admits to facing a selection dilemma going into tonight’s match at FC United (7.45pm).

The side that swept aside Holbeach United in Tuesday’s FA Cup replay showed seven changes from the one that played in the original cup tie in Lincolnshire at the weekend.

Their impressive Aggborough display means Heeley and joint manager Matt Gardiner will face some tough choices going into the match with the Manchester side who have not lost at home since the opening week of the season.

“We are going to have to sit down and look at choosing the best team for the occasion,” Heeley said.

“If you look at some of the players who had been on the bench at Holbeach they were part of our FA Cup side last year – players like Ellis Deeney, Sean Geddes and Nathan Vaughan. They were on the bench because others had earned their chance.

“This is very much a squad game these days. Gone are the times when every player played every game over a season, everything has moved on.

“It is accepted that managers use their squad in the Premiership and that level of professionalism is working it’s way down and is certainly the case in all divisions of the National League these days.

“The players know that they’re not going to play every game. Whichever team we put out is going to be a good team and that showed with the changes we made against Holbeach.

“You just have to look at the pedigree of the players we have at the club now to see how professional this league has become.”

George Nash and Connor Gater missed Tuesday’s replay through illness but Heeley is expecting the pair of them to be available for tonight’s game.

But he won’t be able to call on Dean Waldron who is unavailable.

While a Friday night trip to Manchester brings with it some problems, there are also positives for the players.

Heeley added: “FC United can’t play home games on the same day as Man City.

“It’s just one of those things. It poses a few problems regarding travelling and we have had to plan accordingly.

“We had the choice of what day to play and we decided to opt for the Friday.

“A lot of the lads have families and this way they can have Saturday and Sunday at home as a reward for all their hard work.”
