AN excellent turn-out of 40 anglers competed for the Steve Middleton Memorial Trophy on the Worcester- Birmingham canal but it was Browning matchman Mark Roberson who took the honours with a winning weight of 12lbs 12ozs.

Drawn well on peg 44 at Perdiswell, Roberson netted seven chub to two pounds along with a small carp with all his fish falling for caster bait offered tight too the far bank brambles.

Runner-up prize also went to Perdiswell when ex-Worcester national man Martin Hunt put a worm and caster-caught perch and chub net onto the scales from peg 38 going 11-15-6.

Once again consistent Darren Fisher (Old Ghost) was in the frame this time with a third-placed 5-13-5 mixed bag which came to squatt and groundbait from peg 186 near the viaduct.

In fourth place was Worcester and District United Anglers Association president Colin Pettifer who took a brace of good bream along with a dozen perch from peg 178 to weigh in 5-7-0. Contest section winners were ‘A’: Chris Turner; ‘B’: Les Sanders; ‘C’: Dave Ward and ‘D’: Paul Wilson.

This Sunday sees the foura- side Cavalier Cup planned for the same venue — details from Pettifer on 01905-25193.

Cold foggy conditions greeted members of the Halfway House club for their latest contest on the Church Farm Pool where Steve Williams came out on top from peg 27.

He used pellet and meat bait to land a weight of 29-4- 0. His catch included a 15-8-0 common carp!

Runner-up again was Andy Maybury with an all-silver fish net of 22-10-0, while in third place was club chairman Patrick O’Connell who put a carp and a few silver fish onto the scales to record 8-10-0.

The Droitwich Spa club found a low clear River Avon at Twyning a difficult nut to crack with winner Mick Duffy needing just 1-1-0 to take the verdict.

Second placed went to Alan Cooper with 1-0-0 and in joint third place came Pete Chance and Chris Ballard weighing in just 0-15-0.
