MORE than 300 people packed into Perdiswell Leisure Centre to witness a tremendous night of amateur boxing presented by Worcester City Amateur Boxing Club.

The star of the show was Worcester’s junior Owen Cooper, who picked up the best boxer of the evening.

He was awarded a pair of boxing glove cufflinks for his performance by Anja Potze, of Anja Potze Fine Jewellery of Worcester.

Cooper beat the more experienced Billy Revell, of Burton Park ABC, in an all-action, crowd-pleasing contest.

He had to use all his skills to keep pace with the Northamptonshire boy, who scored well with long, straight punches.

Cooper countered throughout with right hands and short left hooks to catch the judges’ eyes and snatch victory by way of a majority decision.

Welterweight Grant Attwood claimed the Central Area of England youth welterweight belt after his opponent Oli Cassidy, of Tamworth ABC, was disqualified.

Attwood set a relentless pace in the first round, knocking Cassidy’s head back with straight punches stopping him in his tracks.

The Worcester boxer’s opponent was warned for continually holding in an attempt to slow proceedings down.

Rough tactics by Cassidy with his head also received a telling-off from the referee but Attwood remained focused and continued to deliver hard right hands to his taller opponent.

In the second round, Cassidy came out all fired up, pressuring Attwood for the first half with again a hard right hand from Attwood stopping him in his tracks.

As the bout progressed, Attwood grew in confidence and started to dismantle Cassidy with hurtful punches.

The Tamworth boxer had no answer to the pressure and continued to foul until the referee had enough and stopped the bout in favour of Attwood, who enjoyed boxing without a headguard for the first time.

Lightweight Ameen Khan proved to his home crowd that he still had that killer punch by stopping Mark Butler, of Hillcrest ABC, with a devastating well-timed right to his opponent’s temple.

Up to this point, the bout was pretty much even with Khan’s trademark right uppercut against fast combination punching of Butler.

This all ended when Khan swayed just out of range to smash home the decider with not long left of round three.

Schoolboy Dennis Smith, taking part in his first bout, stopped his opponent Lewis Ganner, of William Perry ABC, towards the end of round one with a hard, straight right hand.

Smith’s strength proved too much for Ganner, leaving the referee no choice other than to stop the contest in favour of the Worcester boxer.

The relentless work rate of Worcester lightweight Callum Shaw wore Ethan Collins, of Brooklands ABC, down almost to a standstill in a non-stop three rounds.

There were occasions when Shaw looked close to stopping his opponent with hard hooks to the head but Collins bravely fought on until the final bell, when Shaw picked up a split decision victory.

Other Worcester boxers fought well but could not add to the home team’s winning tally, all losing on points.

Schoolboys James Scarrott and Lathan Butler lost to Luke Jones, of Priory Park ABC, and Armaan Aziz, of Merrydale ABC, respectively.

Juniors Amir Manir lost to Jay Williams, of Salopian ABC, George Butler to Brandon Pinnock, of Christ the King ABC, and Hashim Ali to Hubaish Khan, of Aston ABC.
