UPTON beat old county rivals Redditch 33-10 in Midlands Four West (South) with a dogged if unspectacular display.

Having lost 27-5 at Manor Park the previous week, Upton welcomed back a host of players, including a first start for Dan Staines in the back row.

They played with the wind in the first half but struggled in the scrum initially against a big pack and at the breakdown.

However, Upton went ahead after 20 minutes when, from a five-metre scrum, number eight Chris O’Neil picked and drove to touch down, with fly- half Oli Swift converting.

Redditch reduced the arrears with a penalty but sec - ond-placed Upton scored two converted tries in as many minutes before half-time to break the visitors’ resolve.

The ball was fed inside for centre George Ainge to power through after a break by full- back Alex Flower, who then scorched in from 40 metres.

Upton controlled the ball despite playing against the conditions in the second half and Josh Finch flew in for the bonus-point try after a fine move, with Swift converting.

Redditch hit back with a penalty try when Upton collapsed a scrum from five metres out.

But the last word went to Upton when second row Andy Ford kicked across the field and a kind bounce allowed Martin Muleko to bag a fifth try.

Meanwhile, third-placed Evesham won 33-11 at home to Old Wheatleyans in Midlands Three West (South).

The forwards were evenly matched but the difference was in the back-line.

Evesham looked dangerous with ball in hand and secured a try bonus point through man of the match James Bishop (2), Stu Smart, James Roberts and Sam Hopkins.

Bromyard won a hard- earned bonus point from a 22-7 victory at Bishops Castle and Onny Valley in Midlands Four West (North) with a strong team display.

The visitors resisted early pressure to score through Ollie Barrett, and Jamie Gibbons doubled the advantage to 10-0 at the interval.

Castle struck back with a try but man of the match Barrett was put clear to score his second.

Matt Swain converted and then added the try that earned Bromyard an extra point.
