THRIVING Droitwich Spa match secretary Mick Watson beat a good turnout on the Staffordshire and Worcestershire Canal’s Stewponey section.

After winning the recent Barley Mow club contest on the canal at Oddingley, Watson netted one bream and smaller skimmers with bread punch and red maggot offering for 6lb 10oz 12dr.

Runner-up Steve Robson caught 5-0 of skimmers, Dennis Evans 4-7-8 on chopped worm and Mal Galliers 4-2-6 for fourth place.

Section winners were Simon Wheeler, Pete Hatton and Alan Homer. The next Spa contest is on the Grand Union canal on Sunday.

Bream dominated the WDUAA open on Blackpole and Perdiswell with canal regular Nigel Field winning from peg one with five bream and a few bits from the nearside weighing 11-3-6.

Two pegs away was runner-up Jamie Smith with a maggot-caught three bream catch of 8-2-9.

Top catch from Perdiswell was by the third-placed John Moloney with two late bream added to small fish on peg 30 going 6-0-15.

Fourth was Nick Vaughan on peg seven with a mixed bag, including roach to 1lb, of 5-14-9.

Bob Griffiths won the Barbourne AC contest on the club pool, taking the first Sunday contest of the new season with 47-8.

Offering his pellet bait shallow and into the margins on peg 22, Griffiths caught carp to 6lb.

Second was new member Trevor Morey, whose corn-caught 29-2 carp weight came from the margins of peg three.

Third was the previous Saturday’s winner Ashley Bosworth with 25-10 from peg 28.

Tomorrow, the Barbourne club are on Brockamin top pool.

Richard Blight kept up his good run at Fishponds with his second Friday victory on the bounce.

Good catches were taken by all but Blight’s 44-0 catch won.

Offering red maggot on the hook over groundbait at seven metres on peg 22 saw the ex-Docklow regular take ide along with a few bream and a big tench.

Runner-up Alan Baldwin’s 35-2 peg 11 net was also mostly ide with a few late bream.

Third was Len Merrill on peg 16 with a mixed bag of 24-2.
