SEVEN crews from Upton Rowing Club competed in the British Masters Championships at Nottingham.

The club’s top rower, Julian Scrivener, started the winning streak with gold in the masters E double sculls with Mark Shimmin of Upper Thames RC.

The two of them then faced each other in the masters E single sculls final, with Shimmin getting the gold and Scrivener the silver.

Upton men’s novice four of James Oliver, Dan Herbert, Chris Horne and Andy Poller, coxed by Debbie Thompson, added another gold to the medal haul in a close masters C race against Monmouth.

The two crews were neck-and-neck over the 1,000-metre course but Upton seized victory late on to finish just 0.16 seconds ahead.

On the second day, Scrivener demonstrated his fitness and rowing prowess by swapping disciplines from sculling to sweep oar rowing and competing with members of London RC in the masters D eights.

His crew dominated and won by a substantial margin to bring Scrivener’s personal tally for the championships to two golds and one silver.
