WORCESTER Golf and Country Club’s 18-hole open again proved a popular competition with the course full all day and more than 40 visiting clubs represented.

The winners were Mike Thorneycroft and David Round from Hagley, who notched up an unbeatable 46 stableford points, including 26 on the front nine holes.

Five pairings finished with 44 so count-back meant that, with a back nine 23, the home pairing of Chick Smith and Tony Stanton came runners-up.

Stanton was an 11th-hour substitute after Smith’s regular partner David Hobbs dropped out with an injury.

Third spot was taken by Nigel Perry and Jason Beck from Bransford, fourth were Ralph Young and Barrie Pinchin from Puckrup Hall and fifth were home players Steve Hickman and Jeremy O’Keefe.

David Morgan took the honours in July Thursday Medal Division One with 75 gross 10 handicap 65 nett.

It was his first medal win since joining the club three years ago.

Frank Burden (74-9-65) was runner-up with Anthony Ottway third on 68-2-66.

Ottway also took the prize for the day’s lowest gross.

Veteran Ken Hallett (80-12-68) headed Division Two with Gerritt Billingham (87-15-72) in second and Scott Stevens (87-15-72) third on count-back.

In-form Paul Cutler (81-21-70) won his first medal for a long time when he took top spot in Division Three.

Alasdair MacArthur (87-16-71) finished second on count-back ahead of Robert Webster (88-17-71).
