WORCESTER match man John Shelton again adapted his silver-fish approach to win the Whitehall AC contest on KC Fisheries Hunter pool at Hartlebury.

Feeding sparingly with dead red maggots and pellet into the margins on peg 10 midway along the pool, the St John’s veteran caught nine carp for a match-winning total of 30lb 4oz 0dr.

Canal ace Colin Davis also had to adapt to take a corn-fed all-carp weight of 24-15 for second place.

In third came Rob Page with 23-8 to record his first ever place in the frame, while club star Richard Oliver had to settle for 19-8 in fourth after losing some fish.

Section winners were Dean Grubb, Gareth Cook and Keith Holt.

Despite the tough day, Shelton is now only two points behind Oliver in the club championships.

The final Swan AC contest of the year on Mythe pool saw three anglers separated by just 12oz.

Alf Hand came out on top with four bream taken on the method feeder and maggot from peg seven going 15-14.

From the adjacent peg six, Reg Bastable, despite losing two fish, claimed the runner-up prize with three feeder and worm-caught bream which, along with a few perch, weighed 15-6.

He narrowly beat former WDUAA national man Les Sanders, whose four-bream catch went 15-2.

Section prizes went to Jamie Smith with 5-13, Mick Samson with 11-10 and Rich Brewer with 3-8.

Rob Reece won the Barley Mow contest on the canal at Shernall Green when he put a 6-15-15 catch of skimmers and roach onto the scales on bread punch and maggot.

Second went to Mick Watson with a similar catch going 5-12 and in third came Pete Chance with 2-13-10.

Kevin Downton and Mick Sparkes both won their sections.

Hartleton lake at Drummonds Dub attracted a good turnout for Malvern Anglers’ committee invitation match.

A mild, cloudy and calm day provided enjoyable fishing conditions and there were plenty of fish ready to be caught, albeit mainly small roach, perch and skimmer bream.

Leading the way, Richard Webster used pole tactics with a variety of baits to net 15lb 0oz 0dr of these fish.

In contrast, Sean Taylor managed to find a few bream up to 2lb in a quiet peg to make up his second-placed weight of 13-7.

Dave Harris was busy catching lots of smaller fish to finish third with 12-0 with Bill Hartland (10-14) and Nigel Bayliss (10-1) close behind with double-figure weights of similar fish.

Ian Goddard caught 9-2, Lee Harman 6-15, Graham Rees 6-12, John Shaw 6-2 and Chris Loveridge 5-10.
