WORCESTERSHIRE cycling ace Janet Birkmyre chalked up another win ahead of tomorrow’s National Derny Paced Championships at Lee Valley VeloPark.

Reigning national champion Birkmyre cruised through the heats to make the final at the high-profile Reading Grand Prix on a scorching hot day.

A quality field, including 2015 national silver medallist Niki Kovacs, multiple world masters champion Madeline Moore and professional bike rider Ellie Coster, awaited.

There were several changes in the lead over the course of the 15-kilometre, 33-lap race but when Great Witley’s Birkmyre, paced by Graham Bristow, attacked with 10 laps on the board no one could follow.

The 50-year-old said: “Those last 10 laps were really hard. I was close to my limit when, with four to go, we had to lift the pace again.

“But it was a great race and I was so proud to win wearing the national champion’s jersey.

“This is probably my last year racing at this level, so I am trying to enjoy it.”

Each cyclist is paced by a motorcycle, which allows them to achieve much higher speeds than they would normally.

Track bikes are fixed wheel and have no brakes, so trust and teamwork are essential when riding at speeds of between 55 and 60kph.
