UNIVERSITY of Worcester student Matthew Hudson-Smith’s Rio 2016 ended on a sour note as Great Britain’s 4x400-metre team were disqualified.

Having raced in Sunday’s 400m final, Hudson-Smith joined Nigel Levine, Delano Williams and Martyn Rooney as they stormed to victory in this morning's heat in two minutes 58.88 seconds.

However, their celebrations were cut short after being told they had been disqualified for starting outside the takeover zone.

Rooney said: "We are not too sure what happened, apparently it was some zone violation.

“We haven’t seen them all but I was in my zone. I’ve seen the first changeover and Delano was in his zone, we were in lane one so we couldn’t have broken out of our lane and I’ve just seen Brazil have been put into the final.

“I was so pleased with how the guys ran. I know we have heard a lot about lanes at this Games but it is tight here and Nigel was incredible, Delano was incredible, Matt was awesome and I was so proud of how they ran.

“I was so pumped watching them run and I was emotional coming off that last bend because I was so happy for them and for us.”
