OLD Vigornians beat Bartestree and Lugwardine by four wickets at New Road to secure promotion to Worcestershire Cricket League Division Two for the first time.

It will be the highest level the Worcester club have played at since the restructuring of club cricket in the West Midlands at the beginning of the century.

Captain Osman Fiaz was named the club’s player of the season after he passed 1,000 runs for the season for the first time.

Bartestree chose to bat first on a good pitch in overcast conditions.

They relied heavily on Australian all-rounder Ben Chaplin, who scored 107 in a total of 201.

Spinner Alex Parker took 4-91 in a mammoth 17-over spell.

The side’s leading wicket-taker Azmat Riaz picked up 3-44 and paceman Charlie Lamb 2-39.

OVs won at a canter thanks to Chris Drew’s 53, an undefeated 37 from Ahsan Fiaz, who reached 500 runs for the season for the second time in a row, and a quickfire 23 not out from Riaz.

There was a wobble when OVs lost a few quick wickets and were 164-6 but Riaz and Ahsan Fiaz saw them home with 11 overs to spare.

Lamb won the Mackie Cup for the performance of the year against Harborne for his undefeated hundred batting at nine.

Harborne, who beat Kempsey in a nail-biter, won the Division Three title, OVs were runners-up and Netherton came third.

Mid-table OVs seconds avenged their crushing Division Three defeat to Bartestree and Lugwardine from earlier in the season when they were bowled out for 24.

This time, after being put into bat, they made a dogged 157 all out with Aidan Thompson top-scoring with 46 supported by Tony Meek (44) and his son George Hayward-Meek (21).

Ian Strangward took 6-17.

After Dave Cole made two early breakthroughs, Bartestree were in trouble at 7-3.

But they made steady progress and looked likely winners before a batting collapse saw them bowled out for 121.

Cole took 2-15, Tim Race 2-7 and teenager James Hayward-Meek 5-41 for his second five-for of the season.

Coupled with strong batting displays, the youngest Hayward-Meek was the club’s young player of the season for the second time.
