GOLFER Mike Ransom won a weather-affected Ravenmeadow Seniors Championship in Worcester.

It was unusually played as a par contest and badly affected by a violent storm with heavy rain preventing many finishing.

Of the 26 who started, only 19 completed the course and Ransom won with seven points to reduce his handicap by two to 21.

Six pars and consistent play put Ransom top of the leaderboard.

Jan Schutte (17 handicap) took second on count-back with a steady two following six pars and a birdie on the sixth hole but a back-nine score of -1 just gave him the place.

Terry Palmer (27) also finished with two and had to be content with third after four pars on the front nine were followed by a drop in form on the way home.

Jerry Newbury (15) came in on zero and took fourth on count-back, having carded just a single point better than tied rival Martin Hucker over the back nine.

Dennis Morse (14) won the stableford at Ravenmeadow and Perdiswell Park with 39 points despite three tied players pushing him.

With five pars and two birdies on the 15th and 18th holes, Morse triumphed by one although he succumbed to two double bogies on the eighth and 12th.

Schutte, Roger Jones and Roger Cutler finished on 38 and were separated by count-back.

After parring the first five holes, Schutte dropped in another three and managed a back nine of 19.

Jones (14) was third with his back nine of 18 after nine pars and Cutler (23) finished fourth with 16 on the way home following two pars.

Of 41 starters, just five managed to bring home cards recording nett par of 36 or better.

Veteran Brian Hodgetts (20), one of the later starters, won narrowly with 65 nett in the summer league fifth round.

His five pars and steady play earned the victory on count-back on a windy morning.

Early starter Trevor Ditchfield’s nett 65 held top spot for a long period.

Ditchfield also recorded five pars but his downfall was a quadruple bogie on the tricky eighth hole.

His handicap was reduced by one to 22.

Just one shot behind was Bob Wood (16), whose 66 tied him with Steve Wiggin (13) and Michael Hill.

Count-back gave third and fourth to Wood and Wiggin respectively and left Hill just off the podium.

Eleven of the 35 players returned nett par or better for the course.

Jamie Newton (14) took the medal success on 62 nett with eight pars, two birdies on the second and eighth holes and just one double bogey on the 10th.

He won on count-back with both tied players coming home with 31.

Darren Cook (19) lost out at the death after seven pars and a birdie as three double bogies proved too much.

Chris Luff (7) posted 64 to take third with nine pars and four birdies on the fifth, sixth, 10th and 15th holes.

Cutler was fourth on count-back after seven pars and 28 on the final nine to push out Geoff Jones.

Newton, Cook and Cutler all had a one-shot handicap reduction after 17 of the 33 starters returned nett scores of par or better.
