THE Team Challenge between Worcester and District United Anglers’ Association and their York counterparts produced sensational results for the hosts.

The WDUAA team won in the friendly match on Lyttleton River Severn waters at Stourport by 22 points to 41.

They also claimed the Sir George Eddy Challenge Shield on WDUAA River Avon waters at Pensham 23-40.

York had won the four previous home and away contests in 2014 and 2016.

Kidderminster’s Jerry Bartlett and Redditch’s Alan Prosser amazed the visitors by weighing in 162lb 2oz 0dr and 146-14 of bream at Pensham match respectively.

Stourport on Severn: 1 Paul Lightfoot (York) 7-8, 2 Paul Wilson (Kidderminster) 5-4-8, 3 Reg Bastable (Kidderminster) 4-0; Section A: Bob Corbett (York) 3-9-8; B: Fred Penn (Kidderminster) 3-14-4; C: Bartlett 3-2-8.

Pensham on Avon: 1 Bartlett 162-2, 2 Prosser 146-14-0, 3 Dave Carr (York) 9-10; Section A: Dave Collinson (York) 5-14; B: Ron Price (Cookley) 1-4; C: Phil Reynolds (Cookley) 0-8.

Well-travelled Whitehall angler Mick Watling is better known for specimen catfish and sturgeon catches than match performances but he easily won the final contest of the year on his club pool.

Although unimpressed with his peg 10 draw, Watling ignored the smaller silver fish in favour of carp.

By offering worm and maggot baits on stout tackle over pellet feed, he got through to the bigger specimens, netting three good fish for a winning total of 19-9.

Runner-up was club star Dave Warren with 14-6 consisting of small carp along with one huge eel on his paste and pellet offering on peg 24.

Third came the consistent Keith Holt with a peg eight maggot-taken silvers and carp net of 12-8.

Section winners were Dan Sydall and Gareth Cook.

Richard Oliver was crowned this year’s club champion after narrowly beating Watling on aggregate points.

End pegs dominated the WDUAA winter pairs league first round with Gary Rowberry making the most of peg 10 at the end of the factories with a squatt and pinkie weight of mainly roach of 7-13-4.

At the other end of the same section was runner-up Mick Samson, whose all-roach catch from peg two fell to hempseed bait and went 4-10-8.

Third was Kane Woodfield with 4-9-7 from peg five and the best catch from the Cavalier section went to canal record holder John Moloney, whose 4-7-12 skimmer and roach net netted fourth place.

Top pair on the day were Samson and Richard Brewer with eight points and a 6-14-2 total.

Second also on eight but with less weight came Moloney and Jamie Smith, while getting over last week’s Cavalier Cup humiliation were third-placed Les Sanders and Keith Hunt with nine.

Chris Ballard caught 22-10 of bream and skimmers to top a low turn-out Droitwich Spa contest at Stoke Works.

All his fish fell to maggot over groundbait on a peg near the brambles.

Second was Mick Watson with 11-4 and in third came 70-year-old Dennis Evans with 3-12.

Barley Mow AC visited Tibberton where Ken Legge won with a maggot-taken chub, perch and skimmer weight of 6-3-10.

Droitwich’s Lloyd Davies took second with 6-1, while section prizes went to Mick Price and Brian Wood.
