BARRIE Hope won the Secretary’s Bowl final at Ravenmeadow and Perdiswell Park in Worcester.

The knockout singles matchplay competition over the summer months concluded with a keenly-fought match between Hope (handicap 6) and Mark Purser (9).

Purser took an early lead and dominated the front nine but a fightback from Hope saw him win 2&1.

Ron Gilbert (17) cruised home to win the seniors’ medal by six shots with nett 60 after a 10 pars and a birdie on the third.

Brian Price (13) carded 66 with nine pars but a triple bogey on the fifth and double on the 10th left him too much to do.

Martin Hucker (13) took third place with 68 after rolling in five pars and two birdies on the 13th and 18th.

Roger Cutler (22) took fourth on count-back when he finished tied with Paul Woodward on 69.

His last six holes netted 31 to snatch the place by one shot as 19 players contested the medal with just five finishing with nett par or better for the course.

Gilbert and Price had handicap reductions to 14 and 12 respectively.  Phil Lane and Tom Gregory coped with the blustery autumnal conditions better than most to finish tied on +4 in the par competition involving 25 players.

But the victory was eventually to be 14-handicapper Lane’s, on count-back due to his +3 scored on the back nine.

Eight pars, a birdie on the third and just three double bogies put Lane way out in front.  Later starter Gregory (21) came in with his tied score and the leading two had to wait but he was relegated by virtue of a less successful homeward nine holes.

Seven pars put Gregory up at the front but two double bogies and a quadruple after the turn sealed his fate.

Jan Schutte (17) came home with +1 to take third place again on count-back, having finished tied with fourth-placed Ed Nicklin (14), Dennis Morse in fifth and Phil Kupfer in sixth.

Schutte started poorly with a double bogey but continued in better form to drop in five pars and a birdie on the fourth.

Brian Hodgetts continued his good form and netted 63 to win round six of the summer league.

With a decent two-par start, Hodgetts recorded another six and finished strongly on the last four holes. The golfer carded two double bogies on the fourth and sixth and a triple on the 12th, however, his handicap went down by one to 19.

Steve Williams (7) managed 12 pars and two birdies on the third and 18th as he finished second on count-back with 64.

Jamie Newton (13) finished tied but lost the position on the back nine when he returned 33 compared to Williams’ 31.

He parred the first three holes and returned 10 in total alongside eight bogies.  Schutte was again on the podium with 65 and finished tied with Richard Palfrey and Neil Harrison.

However, Schutte’s back-nine 30 gave him the place on count-back in a competition involving 42 golfers.
