WORCESTER women’s firsts secured their first Midlands Hockey League Division Two win of the season 4-1 against North Stafford.

The new-look team produced a cracking performance against experienced opposition.

From the start, Worcester put pressure on the opposition by pushing high and creating numerous chances.

The scoring started midway through the first half when a short corner was ably finished off by Daisy Ellis.

They kept the pressure up with the back four distributing the ball well.

The crowd did not have to wait too long for the second goal with fine passing play setting captain Jo Walker up for her first of the match.

North Stafford came back but again the defence held firm.

Worcester’s third goal came in the first half with a superb reverse-stick shot from Beth Carter.

North Stafford pulled one back shortly after, drawing out goalkeeper Charlotte Hurley and skilfully driving round behind to finish off.

Worcester again started strongly in the second half with their expansive play offering chances up front.

North Stafford had their chances too through a few short corners but the defensive wall held strong.

The fourth goal came for Worcester with a fine cross to Walker, who provided a angled touch and capped a much-improved team display ahead of Saturday’s visit to Belper seconds.

Worcester’s teenagers started their campaign on a high with a 6-0 win at Towcester in the England Hockey Under 18s Girls’ Knockout Cup first round.

In their first match against the Northamptonshire outfit, they communicated well and passed with ease.

The midfield was controlled by Worcester with touches from Nikki Ralph, Daisy Ellis and Abi Marsh setting up forwards Charlie Platt and Immi Gillgrass.

The back four of Charlotte Berlet, Lucy Stratton, Alice Wilson and Bella Fielden were unbreakable.

Keeper Charlotte Hurley had to make a couple of saves to keep a clean sheet.

Platt and Gillgrass with two, including a penalty flick, made it 3-0 at half-time.

Gillgrass completed her hat-trick with a second penalty flick and added a fourth to sandwich a strike from captain Ralph.
