SEASONED campaigner Reg Bastable beat a talented entry to win the Droitwich Spa AC fur and feather contest on the canal at Porters Mill.

Drawn on the first match peg 1A below Ladywood bridge, Bastable netted a variety of silver fish on worm and pinkie from the centre channel for an unbeatable total of 6lb 11oz 8dr.

From the third pound on peg 28 came runner-up Ken Legge, who put 3-5-10 of mainly small perch onto the scales, all taken on maggot, again from the deeper water.

Third was new club aggregate champion Mick Salcumbe with 3-4 from near the winner on peg one, while Will Priddy finished fourth with 3-2-8.

Section winners were Brian Wood, Mick Watson, Chris Ballard and Dave Lowe.

The Worcester canal proved a tough nut for competitors in the fifth round of the Worcester and District United Anglers’ Association winter pairs.

Nick Vaughan needed just 2-5 of small perch to win with all his catch coming from Lansdown peg six to worm bait.

Runner-up was Chris Senter on the end of the same section where he too took small perch of 2-0.

Les Sanders finished third on peg seven with 1-7-3 and top weight from the factories was Mick Samson’s 1-2-4 catch.

The best pair on the day were Vaughan and Tim Biddle with six points followed by Sanders and Keith Hunt on seven.

With one match remaining, Senter and Rob Francis are league leaders with 35 points, Matt Hodgetts and Paul Wilson second on 37 and Samson and Rich Brewer third with 43.

The highlight of the day was a rare, well-conditioned 1lbs 9oz brown trout caught by Francis from the factories section though it did not count.
