A SUNDAY league football match in Worcester was abandoned after a “mass brawl” erupted involving both sets of players.

The melee led the McDonald’s Worcester and District League Division Four clash between Worcester Saints Reserves and Lower Teme and Martley to be called off after 70 minutes.

And the two teams now look set to face disciplinary action from Worcestershire Football Association with the league describing the incident at Bilford Road as “disappointing”.

Promotion-chasing Lower Teme and Martley, who trail leaders St John’s Colts by seven points, were on course for victory as they led the hosts 4-2.

But with 20 minutes remaining the match descended into chaos when players clashed off the ball leading referee George MacPherson to call a halt to proceedings.

It is understood the fight started after a player from each side received a red card.

League secretary Tim Phillips said: “The referee reported to me on Sunday that the game between Worcester Saints Reserves and Lower Teme and Martley was abandoned in the 70th minute after both sets of players got involved in a mass brawl.

“The county FA will consider the referee’s report and take any action they deem necessary.

“The match will be replayed at a later date.”

Phillips added: “Naturally we are always disappointed when something like this happens. It doesn’t happen very often but when it does the clubs will have to answer to the county FA.”

The Worcester News contacted both clubs but neither had commented at the time of going to press.

The brawl comes just over a month after Brewers Arms goalkeeper Aaron Stanley was banned from football for five years after assaulting a referee in a Division Four match at Worcester Saints Reserves in December.
