WORCESTER’S Boughton Park enjoyed success in the county closed squash competition at Stourbridge Lawn Tennis and Squash Club.

Mark Bates won the men’s B trophy after a tough five-setter in the final against S Read from Droitwich Spa Leisure Centre.

Bates drove Read to the back of the court with punishing drives to overcome some flamboyant shots.

Chris Hawken took the over 60s trophy without dropping a game.

In the final match Hawken broke up the hard-hitting rallies of Manor Park’s Peter Mortimer with lobbed serves and soft boasts to win 3-0.

The winners were the only players representing the Park set-up.

But Park have three county champions as Spencer Cooper claimed the over 50s county closed racketball title with a 3-0 win over holder Ian Hughes.

Both squash and racketball are played competitively at the St John’s home of Worcester Golf and Country Club.
