JUST 17 players took to the tees after recent inclement weather for Ravenmeadow and Perdiswell Park’s golf medal competition.

Mark Purser (8 handicap) returned the only card showing a score equivalent to nett par or better for the course when he finished with a respectable 67.

With 13 pars on his card and just one double bogey he eventually took the win four shots ahead of second place.

Steady Phil Lane (16) scored 71 as six pars helped the cause but too many missed chances left him well short with two double bogies and two triples.

Steve Williams (6) took third place on countback on 72 after finishing tied with the in-form Geoff Jones (20).

With the obvious threat of more overnight rain and the possibility of a damp and dreary morning the starting field for the stableford was down to 25.

Jan Schutte brought home 40 points to win by three and was only one of three to return scores equivalent to nett par or better for the Worcester course.

His six pars and scoring on every hole proved conclusive for the seniors’ captain whose handicap was cut from 17 to 16.

With just one double bogey he scored well and recorded 20 points on the way out and another 20 on the way home.

Steve Duggan (20) took second place after returning 37 after also managing to score points on every hole.

But with just three pars and four double bogies he really needed to knuckle down  and find the elusive cups earlier on to challenge for top spot.

Duggan held on to take the place ahead of Mick Huggins (18) on 36 and Geoff Edge (22) who continued his return from a lengthy illness lay-off with 35.

Williams posted what turned out to be an unbeatable score early on in the Saturday stableford.

His 42 points proved more than enough and earned the victor a one-shot playing handicap reduction down to five.

Kieran Sherlock had another fine round with a tidy 41 points and also saw his handicap cut from 15 to 14.

Tom Gregory (21) took third place after handing in 38 ahead of three tied on 37.

Russell Evans (21) saw off Steve Baylis and Norman Vernalls on countback from a good field of 46 players.
