WORCESTER Bowls Club start their 150th anniversary celebrations on Sunday.

The Wood Terrace club was opened in April 1867 by city MP Alexander Clunes Sherriff.

They are the oldest outdoor bowls club in Worcestershire.

To commemorate 150 years Worcester will play games against prestige teams such as Bowls England, Friends of Bowls England, Barbarians, Midland Counties and Three Counties.

Club secretary Jan Jackson said: “Sunday is the opening day for our 150th anniversary.

“Our celebration match will start with drinks and nibbles at 2pm. The green will be opened by our president Ian Hunt at 3pm and we will have a game between our members.

“It will also be an open day to welcome anyone who wishes to try a game of bowls. All will be welcome and shoes and bowls will be provided.

“We have been working towards these celebrations for nearly two years. The clubhouse has been decorated throughout by our members with new LED lighting fitted.”

A raffle will be running throughout the season to help fund the prestige games and to purchase anniversary shirts for all members.

Worcester will play the first match in their 150th year on Thursday when they will have a celebration champagne buffet followed by the cutting of the anniversary cake and a game against city team Grosvenor.
