HINDLIP FC enjoyed a successful trip to Italy after winning bronze medals in their first venture abroad.

The walking football tournament in Lignano Sabbiadoro featured teams from England and the host nation.

The games were played on a league basis over three days on all-weather pitches.

The two main groups were for players aged over 50 and there was a second competition for those over 65.

Some big names were involved, including Arsenal, Manchester City and Bologna as well as teams from Bassano and Portici.

Hindlip were in the main over 50s competition and only lost two games as they finished third to win bronze medals.

Club player-manager Ronnie Barker said: “We’ve only been running this club for a year and this was a fantastic achievement for our club.

"Numbers are growing and next year we hope to field squads in both competitions.

“The tournament was very well organised and it shows the way walking football has grown in England.

"The pace and quality of the play was very high but the great thing about walking football is it is a sport that welcomes a wide age range and players of all abilities.

“We play twice a week at the police headquarters at Hindlip and welcome all players, both men and women.

"It’s a very friendly set-up and everyone is made welcome.

"We intend to compete next year and this time with squads in both competitions.”
