CONSISTENT Norman Vernalls won the Presidents Bowl at Ravenmeadow and Perdiswell Park Golf Club in Worcester.

Vernalls only finished seventh and fifth in the two rounds but shot 129 nett overall with 65 and 64.

He took the trophy with tenacity, patience and a bit of magic.

Mark Purser carded 64 and 66 for 130 for second overall.

Mark Colley could not maintain his form by scoring 61 and 71 for 132.

Colley (15 handicap) won a close first round with birdies on the sixth, 15th, 17th and 18th holes alongside a nine-par haul.

But he also carded a triple bogey on the seventh and a quadruple bogey on the fourth.

Ade Tinker, whose handicap dropped from 13 to 12, brought in 62 to take second.

He was ahead of tied finishers Chris Williams (14), who was third, and John Griffiths (8) on 63.

Tommy Hayes (3) used all of his guile and tenacity to post 60 to win the second round with seven birdies on the second, third, sixth, 12th, 16th, 17th and 18th holes and 10 pars.

But he did not play in the first round and went home with a cut to his handicap to two.

Second was Chris Luff (7) with 62 as he took the place on countback with his better back nine of 30.

Another fine round by Mike Williams brought him in with 62 too and earned a handicap cut from 21 to 19.

Jamie Newton, whose handicap dropped from 14 to 13, finished fourth on countback after handing in 64 to finish tied with eventual champion Vernalls.

Duane Parsons had a near-perfect round to win the club medal with 56 nett.

He got off to a stunning start with a par, birdie, birdie, par, birdie, three bogies and a par to do the first nine holes in 24.

Another five pars were added on the way in alongside a triple-bogey six on the 14th and a quadruple-bogey eight on the 12th.

Parsons' handicap shot down from 22 to 19.

Taking second place was Dick Cumming (27) who finished tied with Kieran Sherlock (11) on 65 but ahead on countback.

Geoff Jones (20) and Jeff Ingleston both got 67 but the former took the bottom step of the podium on countback.
