IT was double gold at the Commonwealth Youth Games for Worcestershire in The Bahamas as Sian Bobrowska and Leah Grosvenor both defeated all opposition to help England top the judo medal table.

Sixteen-year-old Bobrowska, a brown belt from Worcester, beat Scottish opponent Fiona Todman in the under 48-kilogram final as she remained in control and took her opportunity to win on the ground.

She had earlier beaten an Australian in the semis of the lightest judo event at the games with a trademark move on the ground after opening with an armlock success against an Indian player.

Bobrowska started the sport at Worcester Judo Club where she stayed for many years, particularly under the coaching of Duncan Jones, and also trained at Samurai in Kidderminster for a while before moving to Walsall and Birmingham.

Meanwhile, 15-year-old black belt Grosvenor won her under 57kg weight category.

She won her first contest in just 17 seconds against a girl from Barbados and then dominated against an Australian in the semi-finals, eventually triumphing with a ground hold.

In the final against Scotland’s Emma Forrest a confident Grosvenor repeated the victory over her opponent from the Northern Ireland Open.

The Stourport teenager was equally strong on her feet and on the ground.

In the end she took the final to the ground, first threatening an armlock and then moving neatly into a ground hold to secure the gold medal.

With England taking two more golds and two bronzes out of the eight judo categories the Worcestershire girls ensured the nation finished top of the medals table in the sport.

It was the first time for either competitor winning gold at a level where the winner’s national anthem is played, rewarding both with proud moments.
