SIXTY and Worcestershire Motor Club member Glyn Thomas claimed co-driving success with Chris Hellings on the gruelling Roger Albert Clark Rally.

Starting from the iconic Shelsley Walsh hillclimb track in Worcestershire, the four-day event saw classic rally cars tackle 300 miles of forest tracks in Wales, Northumbria and Scotland.

Thomas, the club's reigning champion co-driver, said: "Whilst we're used to one-day events in more modern cars, this was a real challenge to balance speed with maintaining cars that are all over 30 years old."

The crew survived a damaged gearbox on their Volkswagen Golf GTI to complete the course in Kielder 33rd overall, first in class and first front-wheel drive.

Thomas, who hails from Stourport, added: "This was a great result for us and we're grateful to the team from Historic Motorsport South West for keeping the car in good order.

"The event is run every two years so we hope to be back in 2019."

The club meet at The Huntsman Inn, Kempsey, on the last Thursday of every month.

After four tough days of non-stop action, Uxbridge's Guy Anderson and Worcester co-driver Steve Link finished 28th overall and second in class.

A good start saw the pair sit 16th out of 98 with the highlight setting the 13th fastest time in the first proper forest test.

Going into day two in the Scottish Borders, the crew set off to tackle 100-stage miles running into the night.

The going became rough and did not suit the little Sunbeam as losing the exhaust meant the pair dropped 45 seconds to finish the day 16th again after being as high as 13th.

Day three in Scotland saw the crews greeted with ice with Anderson and Link struggling for traction and blinded by a low sun.

The ice eventually went and they fought their way back up to 14th overall before a cracked axle meant they were out for the day.

After a significant time penalty, the pair started again in 35th.

A good attacking opening saw them net a 12th fastest stage time in the first test and then set top-20 efforts on the way to second in class.
