WORCESTER powerlifter David Probert finished his career on the highest note after being crowned a world champion.

The 41-year-old won at the World Drug Free Powerlifting Full Power Championships in Rockland, near Boston, USA, after previously claiming the British title and now plans to retire.

Probert, who trains at Prime Fitness gym in Westbury Street, said: “I went knowing it was my last event and I would retire after.

“I squatted 145kg, benched 95kg but sadly injured my elbow then and went on to deadlift 190kg all at 66.3kg body weight in the 67.5kg masters one class.

“I came out of retirement for one more crack at the major titles I had never won but had come so close to before.

“In 12 months I have won two British qualifiers, one British title and now a world title. It’s been a massive achievement for myself just to keep going.

“Thanks to Katie Fonz at PS Sports Therapy who has kept my body in good condition, to Prime Fitness for all the support and to my good friend and coach David Low who has been there with me through all the highs and lows during my wonderful career.

“He always kept pushing me forward to achieve the ultimate accolade.”
