RETIRING Worcester Table Tennis League president Doug Young has been recognised for his long service.

Young was presented with an engraved silver salver by the league during a small luncheon at The Retreat pub, Norton.

After 60 years of involvement in table tennis, he retired as president at the end of the 2016-17 season.

Young previously served as divisional secretary and chairman.

He was chairman of Worcestershire County Table Tennis Association and a national councillor for the English Table Tennis Association.

Young was a national and international umpire and a referee at Commonwealth, European and World Championships.

His duties took him all over the country and to diverse places such as Paris, Rotterdam, the Isle of Man, Nairobi and Tokyo.

Young also took charge as referee of numerous English Senior National Championships.

A league spokesman said: "Doug will be remembered with great affection and be sadly missed."
