WORCESTER’S Jenny Nesbitt set a personal best in the 10,000-metres final at her first Commonwealth Games.

The 23-year-old clocked 32 minutes 58.14 seconds to finish 17th for Wales in humid conditions on the Gold Coast in Australia.

Worcester Athletic Club’s Nesbitt, who studies at the University of Bath, recovered from two knee operations to compete at the World University Games and European Under 23 Championships last year.

Nesbitt said: “The opportunity to represent Wales at my first major championships was a great honour.

“I can walk away from the track proud of what I have achieved but also hungry for so much more.

“The crowds and the atmosphere were fantastic and carried me on over the last few laps and I can’t wait to do it again.

“Having a late call-up into the team meant I had little time to prepare but I’ve had so much support.

“I have enjoyed the whole experience out on the Gold Coast and am so grateful for the chance to be here.”

Uganda’s Stella Chesang won in 31.45.3 with her compatriot Mercyline Chelangat third and Stacy Ndiwa from Kenya second.

Meanwhile, Worcester netball player Jodie Gibson’s England side beat New Zealand for the first time in Games history to top Pool B and go through unbeaten to the semi-finals at the Coomera Indoor Sports Centre on Saturday.

Severn Stars player Gibson, 25, said after the 54-45 win: “We played with passion, pride and determination. I am so proud of my team.

“The support from everyone has been incredible throughout this journey and it’s not over yet.”

England had previously thrashed Wales 85-31.

Worcester-born Ella Gibbons’ Scotland side fell 60-29 to New Zealand and 57-37 to Uganda.

England’s and Worcester Wolves ace Robert Gilchrist’s basketball medal ambitions were dashed after Canada clinched a 97-79 quarter-final victory.

They were eliminated after a first-half scoring spree from Canada who advanced to face New Zealand.

Ex-Wolves player Orlan Jackman made a positive start for his team but England could not keep up.
