FORMER University of Worcester student Matt Hudson-Smith endured a Commonwealth Games to forget in Australia.

The runner was disqualified from his 400-metre heat on the Gold Coast for stepping out of his lane after winning in 45.57 seconds.

Then in the men’s 4x400m relay heats Birchfield Harriers' Hudson-Smith, 23, pulled up with an injury on the first leg and England were knocked out.

Team-mate Dwayne Cowan said: “It is very frustrating and I’m just sorry for Matt.

"He was in really good shape so it was a good opportunity for us to get the gold.”

Hudson-Smith won gold in the 4x400m Games relay at Glasgow in 2014.

Meanwhile, Worcester's Katrina Hart was the final runner out of six in 14.82 in the T38 100m.

Hart, 27, won a gold medal at the 2010 Delhi Games.

Worcester-born Ella Gibbons' Scotland netball side finished in ninth place at the Games after beating Barbados 50-48 following overtime in their play-off.

Gibbons said: "It was an incredible experience. I'm so proud to finish with this win."

England women's rugby sevens started their Games with a 17-5 win over Fiji before losing 29-12 to Australia.

The team includes Worcester's Lydia Thompson and ex-city player Heather Fisher.
