THREE Worcester St John’s Cycling Club riders put in good performances at the Welland Trophy open time trial.

Club stalwart Mark Corbett was third in 35 minutes 25 seconds while Simon Adcook finished 13th in 38.41 and Dave Walker clocked 41.05.

Sixteen St John’s riders chose not to enter the event to keep themselves fresh for their own open time trial which was due to take place the next day in Inkberrow.

But organisers were forced to cancel the event due to ongoing roadworks on the course.

The weather was dull with a little breeze but better than predicted.

Fifty-one riders entered riding either for the The League of Veteran Racing Cyclists or Veterans Time Trials Association. The LRVC won easily.

Richard Oakes from Team Jewson triumphed overall in 35.18 ahead of Tim Ashton from Royal Sutton in 35.20.

Meanwhile, Simon Garrett won Worcester St John’s first 10-mile time trial of the season at Hallow.

He collected 50 points with a time of 23.34.

Rob Nicholls’ 47 for fourth in 24.40 took him top of the club time trial league with 144 after three events.

Stuart Parker rode the fastest road bike of the night in sixth with 26.31.

There was a strong turn-out of 35 riders aged 15 to 83 for the Worcester St John’s time trial at The Rhydd near Malvern despite the weather.

As well as St John’s, other clubs were represented in Echelon, NJC-Biemme-Echelon, VC Sevale and Gannet including five newcomers testing themselves against the clock for the first time.

The cool, changeable conditions mixed with the earlier heavy rain led to increasing amounts of standing water on the roadside around the six-mile course.

Flooding of the B4211 north of Hanley Castle meant a revised shortened course, bringing the distance down to just under five miles.

Home rider Garrett won in 10.35, 19 seconds ahead of Martin Lines and Echelon’s Jez Pile who both finished on 10.54.

Nikki Juniper from NJC-Biemme-Echelon took the women’s top spot and seventh overall in 11.13.

Harry Tait was fastest under 16 and 15th overall in 12.47.
