THE coveted Lady Dudley Cup will be up for grabs at the Worcestershire point-to-point at Chaddesley Corbett on Saturday (2pm).

The meeting attracted a crowd of more than 10,000 last year and is regarded as the most prestigious amateur racing event in the West Midlands.

Chaddesley's classic contest for amateur riders, the men's open, is held over more than three miles and involves 18 fences.

The Edge Careers-sponsored cup was first run in 1897 and 11 horses have been entered with dry weather predicted.

Trainer Phil Rowley won last year with Barel of Laughs and will be keen to repeat the feat with Grandturgeon or Now Ben.

There is little between them on form and conditions will dictate which one is the Bridgnorth stable's representative.

Grandturgeoon was impressive earlier in the season but suffered two setbacks against Virak at Haydock and Lotus Pond at Bangor when attempting to concede 10lbs to the winner.

Lotus Pond needs to have made major improvement to overcome the turnaround in the weights though trainer Micky Bowen is keen on his chances.

Now Ben scored at Cottenham in the new year but was beaten on his seasonal debut at Barbury by Iberico though could be strongly fancied on last year's form.

Iberico and Grandturgeon met twice last year and the latter prospered both times at Maisemore where they met on level weights and at Chaddesley where the former was conceding 4lbs.

Clive Bennett's 12-year-old has not been out since mid-January or exposed to the worst of the conditions which could prove crucial.

Diana Ralph's Old Pride scored at Brampton Bryan a few weeks ago but over two-and-a-half miles and the extra furlongs will test his stamina.

Drumhart ran at the same meeting but third in a more low-level contest does not look good enough to score in this company while Squirrel Esquire has been placed on four occasions.

Michaela Tallett forms part of the close-knit team at Rowley’s Bridgnorth yard.

Her race riding career has yet to take off but the stable has an interesting entry in the novice riders in Aupcharlie.

His performances in Ireland suggest a level of ability his rivals would find difficulty matching.

He has been running in the best company and with top-class jockeys.

Crowded Room won over course and distance just after Christmas and with the rest of the entries looking much of a muchness could regain the winning thread.

Ballycahane is another with a course victory to his credit and never seems to run a bad race.

Aupcharlie also holds an engagement in the Skinners-sponsored ladies' open but a more difficult challenge sees Arthur’s Secret at the top of the list.

He is back on track after a hiccup at the end of last season and it will be a surprise if he gets beaten.

Maybe Plenty ran well after a long absence at Andoversford two weeks ago and opened her account at Chaddesley.

She is bound to strip fitter on this occasion but will require Arthurs Secret’s connections to seek other options before she can prevail.

Pentiffic relishes testing conditions and having won the race 12 months ago will be fancied to do so again.

Queen Olivia and Goodnight Vienna always put in solid shows in these races while Vinnie Red is expected to improve for his recent run behind Hellorboston at the Cotswold.

The conditions and 4-5-6 year old maiden are run over two-and-a-half miles.

Stoleaway sets the standard in the conditions but Sam Cavallaro and Namako could lower his colours.

Rockinrolldixie has been pulled up three times this year so the shorter distance could prove beneficial while Coeur de Fou, Carrig Dubh, Sacre Toi and Well Mett are also worth considering.

Uppertown Hawk makes his seasonal debut but his best form has been on firmer ground.

No Likey had good form with Phillip Hobbs and ran well at Charing in a similar type of race.

The Martin Weston-trained The Late Legend could win either the two-and-a-half or three-mile maiden.

Man in the Moon, Ninth Wave and The Maestro are three unraced youngsters from the Rowley yard.

Round Robin and Abigail Banks are yet to win a race despite their potential and could be pipped by Sulu Magic and Tekap.

The Tollit, Rucker, Smith Maxwell and Banks families are all represented in the members and one of the stables always does well in the event.

It does not happen often but this year they may have to give best to Garthorpe winner Mirs Choice and has the mares allowance in her favour or the improving Mistercobar who has claimed his last two races.
