WORCESTER'S Lee Huxley claimed a prestigious drag racing win at Santa Pod Raceway's The Doorslammers event.

The Dark Horse team ace won the £5,000 OCS Group Big Bracket Sunday section at the Wellingborough venue ahead of Jens Könnecke.

Huxley beat the Saturday winner Collin Morrice in the semi-finals.

The city team's 620-horsepower fibreglass 1968 Ford Mustang Fastback ran faultlessly at the meeting.

Huxley also won the first drag racing event held at Rockingham near Corby.

It was the team's first event where cars raced over an eighth of a mile on a surface that had no preparation unlike a purpose-built strip.

Twenty-four cars battled with victor Huxley eventually sharing the £2,000 prize pot with the runner-up Harrison Brown who raced in a 1968 Chevrolet Camaro.

He goes back to the venue on the August bank holiday to contest more honours.

Huxley said: “This was something very different from our usual racing. Running out of track in a straight line was tricky at over 100mph heading for the bend! Thanks to all our sponsors.”

Huxley's father Brian and brothers Darren and Marc were joined by crew chief Andy Walker and engine builder Tim Hines at the event.

Brian, who turns 76 this month, races at the summer nationals on June 30 at Santa Pod.

The team head to Hockenheim, Germany, in August for a drag race on the F1 circuit where Lee will aim for his first win at the venue.
