Duo dominate at county contest

WORCESTER’S Lewis Siket won three titles at the Worcestershire County Closed Senior Table Tennis Championships.

He won the men’s singles title at Redditch’s Arrow Vale Sports Centre, beating Adam Nutland 9-11, 12-10, 11-13, 11-5, 11-9 in the final.

With his son Michael, Siket also took the men’s doubles title, defeating John Collymore and Mark Brookes 11-5, 11-8, 5-11, 11-3.

His third title was the veterans’ men’s singles when he beat holder Steve Horton 11-3, 11-6, 8-11, 9-11, 11-9.

Margaret Dignum also won three titles and was runner-up in the women’s singles to Kate Hughes.

Hughes won the final in five close games 7-11, 13-11, 11-13, 14-12, 12-10.

Dignum’s titles came in the veteran’s women’s singles, played as a group, with Lynda Davies finishing second and Sue Horton third. She also triumphed in the mixed doubles with Dave Rogers over five games, seeing off Nutland and Sue Horton.

Dignum then joined up with Lisa Lechner in the women’s doubles to defeat Hughes and Sue Horton over five games.

The veterans’ doubles were claimed by Steve Horton and Brookes, who beat Stephane Bonnafous and Mark Fiddian 3-0.

The under 21s singles was won by Nutland, who beat Chris Pearce in the final.

The consolation singles went to Leigh Hipkins, who beat Matt Rayner in four.

Meanwhile, having got through the previous round by just eight points, Himbleton ‘A’ met Cripplegate Guild in the first Worcester League Team Handicap Knock-out semi-final.

The villagers again cut it fine and, despite enjoying home advantage, found the Guild too much and eventually lost by 10 points.

Nick Whitham was Guild’s main points-gatherer with good support from Steve Glazzard.

For Himbleton, John Rowe was in good form, beating Glazzard and taking a game from opposing number one Phil Houghton.

The other semi saw Strensham, currently seventh in Division Two, in a David and Goliath encounter, with Division One leaders St George’s.

For Strensham, Ian Keetley put in a good performance, taking the first set against Dale Dickinson 21-16 and holding his own against Michael Siket.

Paul Davies also forced a close set, losing 21-17 to Dickinson to add to the Strensham total.

Lewis Siket made great efforts to overcome the anticipated handicap, winning a number of sets 21-0 and 21-2, but this proved to be in vain as Strensham ran out winners by 82 points.

Cripplegate Guild and Strensham will play the final before the end of this month.

Wayne Chopping won the men’s singles title in the Malvern League Championships at the Winter Gardens.

He beat holder Dave White in the final 11-8, 11-8, 12-10.
