Sue’s back with victory on the canal

TOP female match angler Sue Jaques marked a return to the Worcester canal with a narrow win.

Using a secret bait, Jaques triumphed in the Worcester and District United Anglers’ Association pairs league fourth round.

With the venue again in a difficult mood for the 24 competitors, she was drawn favourably on peg 250 at the end of the Diglis section, netting skimmer bream and roach for a 3lbs 7oz total.

Just one ounce behind was venue regular Steve Middleton who, like most of the leading contenders, used breadpunch on his peg 247 with another skimmer weight of 3-6.

Third was Mark Newman on peg 242 who took 3-4 to the scales, while fourth was pole expert Alan Baldwin whose 1-11 catch came from peg 246.

The best weight from the Commandery section was in-form Mick Herbert’s 1-0 net of small perch.

Top team on the day were Gary Rowberry and Paul Harris with eight points, while joint second were Middleton and Ivor Ballard along with Baldwin and Les Sanders on nine.

After four rounds, Herbert and Nick Vaughan’s lead has been drastically reduced to 30 points, while Rowberry and Harris are on 38 and Baldwin and Sanders have 41.

Colin Harvey once again won the Pitchcroft open with 13-2 of chub and roach, taken on the waggler from fancied peg one.

Runner-up with the same method was John Heath, who included a roach of over 1lb and a huge chub from his peg on the bottom of the bend for 9-6.

Third was Alf Hand weighing 6-10 from the boards and in fourth place weighing 5-14 was Dave Everett. Top angler in the Barbourne AC contest on the club pool at Cotheridge was Mick Taylor on peg 24.

Taylor netted carp to 8lbs by presenting sweetcorn bait at 12 metres for an impressive early spring total of 59-4.

Pete Hughes was among the front-runners when he secured second place with a silver fish and small carp weight of 36-10 from peg seven. Bob Griffiths’ third-placed 26-2 catch came mainly from the margins of peg 19.

This weekend, the club are on the Rifleman’s section of the Droitwich canal.
