HEAVY snow sweeping the country has taken its toll on the weekend’s sporting fixtures with a raft of matches being called off.

Worcester City’s match at Bishop’s Stortford tomorrow, along with Hereford United’s game against Dartford, are both off due to the freezing conditions.

However, a decision on Worcester Warriors’ Amlin Challenge Cup clash with Gernika (3pm) will be made in the morning, while Kidderminster Harriers’ trip to Macclesfield Town is still on.

City’s Blue Square Bet North trip to Hertfordshire was postponed today following a pitch inspection at Woodside Park.

Bishop’s Stortford are without covers and the pitch had been under snow for much of the week, making the decision inevitable.

Hereford acted quickly to call off their Blue Square Bet Premier clash against Dartford at Edgar Street after holding an inspection at noon today. No new dates have been set for either match.

All games tomorrow and Sunday in the Worcester and District League are also off.

Warriors, however, say the Sixways pitch is in perfect condition for their European match against Gernika having had a heated dome in place for much of the week.

Officials held talks with tournament organisers ERC and the Safety Advisory Group over travel and supporter safety. The areas around the stadium should be cleared of snow to enable supporters to get to the ground.

Richard Hill’s side have already been eliminated from the competition after Perpignan’s 40-22 victory over Rovigo last night.

Harriers are due to travel to Macclesfield and the Silkmen were hopeful of the game taking place. According to their website, the pitch was playable today but volunteers were being sought to clear snow from the covers.

Worcester Hockey Club have postponed tomorrow’s Midlands One match with North Stafford at the University of Worcester.

The rest of Worcester’s home fixtures, whether at the university or Nunnery Wood, are also off.

All Pershore’s matches have been postponed, including the home derby with Evesham in West Midlands Division Two.

Tonight’s British Basketball League match between Worcester Wolves and London Lions was also postponed because the Lions were unable to get to the University of Worcester.

Other events, including a kickboxing tournament at Worcester’s Perdiswell Leisure Centre and swimming gala at Droitwich, have also been cancelled.
