WORCESTER'S Joel Smith competed for Great Britain at the FINA World Masters Swimming Championships in Hungary.

Smith, who trains and coaches at Worcester Swimming Club, had to achieve qualifying standards to represent GB and travelled to Budapest for the 25 to 29 year age group's 50-metre freestyle.

Ranked 53rd in the event, the 27-year-old swam superbly to win his heat in 25.25 seconds, just outside his personal best but enough to improve his entry rankings significantly.

He eventually finished a credible 32nd place in a highly-competitive age group with several ex-Olympic and World Championships swimmers in the category.
