NORMAN Vernalls took the plaudits from the season-long President’s Claret Jug Eclectic at Worcester's Ravenmeadow and Perdiswell Park.

The Spring National, Summer National, Millennium Cup, Olive Hodgetts Memorial Cup and Founder’s Cup were the competitions involved.

Players took their best nett scores on any individual hole through to the eclectic league.

The jug was won by a battling, back-to-form Vernalls with 51 nett which included two pars.  Four finished tied on 52 with countback putting them into their final placings.

Roy Turner was second, Mike Sanders third, Andy Turner fourth and Matt Hughes fifth.  Geoff Edge (25) claimed a club stableford with 43 points on countback from second-placed Joe Jackson (20).

Scott Thomas (13) was third on 39 on countback from Sanders (23).

Edge was pushed all the way but 21 points on the back nine fended off Jackson's 20.

Edge carded five pars but was glad of his shots in hand after three double bogies and a triple on the fifth hole.

Jackson bagged a birdie on the ninth and six pars but also dropped a few points with a double bogey on the 11th and quadruple bogey on the fourth.

Thomas' 10 pars got him in with a chance but bogies on 14 and 18 after a triple bogey on the first restricted him.

But an improved back nine of 21 proved to be decisive as Sanders only amassed 20.

With just five pars, three double bogies and two triples, Sanders cut it a bit fine.

Two podium finishers received handicap adjustments with Edge down to 23 and Jackson to 18.

Ten out of 38 players returned scores equating to nett par or better for the course.

Bob Wood (17) edged out Richard Markham (7) to win the club's winter classic with 42 points.

Roy Turner (17) was third on 41 ahead of Thomas (13) on 39.

With weather conditions generally improving through the morning, the later starters of the 51-strong field got to grips with the course better.

Countback was required and with the top two still tied over the last six holes it came down to the final three where Wood scored seven compared to Markham's five.

With a birdie on the third and six pars, Wood had to rely on his handicap as he succumbed to his only double bogey of the day on the 14th.

Markham grabbed birdies on three and nine and 14 pars alongside a bogey on the 15th and double bogey on the 17th.

Turner got a birdie on 17 and seven pars while Thomas had to call on the countback procedure to see off Dave Bradley despite 12 pars.

Wood's handicap went down to 16 while Markham dropped to six, Turner to 16 and Thomas to 12.
