KING'S School Worcester reached seven A finals out of eight at the Bromsgrove School Invitational Relays Gala.

Twenty-six schools attended the annual gala at Worcester's Perdiswell Leisure Centre from as far afield as Nottingham, Bedford and Newcastle-under-Lyme.

The standard was high with 30 teams in some of the relays involving national and regional swimmers.

There were 4x50-metre freestyle and medley relays in the under 15 and 18 age groups.

The King's girls’ under 15s team of Alexandra Barry, Hannah Dixon, Josie Armstrong and Hannah Woodcock won the freestyle relay against tough competition and finished third in the medley.

The boys’ under 15s, Daniel Day, Adam Rutter, Leo Rendall-Baker and Henry Halford, claimed silver in the medley relay.

Sam Hartley, who had been swimming up in the older age group, moved to the under 15s at the last minute to replace Day due to sickness and helped them to bronze in the freestyle.

The under 18s girls, Naomi Marsden, Bella Woodcock, Daisy Ellis and Izzy Trow, won bronze in both the freestyle and medley.

The freestyle was an exciting race as Marsden, fighting for third place, finished with a blanket finish with two other girls and got the bronze on the touch.

The older boys had two drop outs on the day due to illness and injury, leaving Oscar Van Vuren as the only under 18 swimmer in the team.

Ben Holmes swam in the medley relay heat and had to withdraw from the final due to an ankle injury.

Hartley (U15), Adam Rutter (U13) and Henry Halford (U13) joined Van Vuren to fight hard against older, stronger swimmers in the medley relay A final and qualified for the freestyle B final.
