WORCESTER football team ASPIE Avengers finished their season on a high.

Under captain George Simpson, Avengers won both the Three Counties Ability Counts League and the Sandwell Inclusion League.

They were also finalists in the FA Peoples Cup at St George’s Park.

The team were formed in May 2015 through ASPIE which is a social group for adults with Asperger syndrome in Worcester city centre.

A group spokesman said: "Being able to participate in football with each other helps banish the crippling anxiety and dark intrusive thoughts which can prevent young adults with Aspergers joining clubs which cater mainly for neurotypicals.

"All members of the team are excellent ambassadors for ASPIE.

"The team’s enthusiasm, motivation and hard work have resulted in support from Worcestershire FA in ensuring we do things right and funding the strip.

"Disability Sport has provided weekly coaching from the beginning. The team train 50 weeks of the year at King George V Playing Fields, Worcester."

Avengers won the Worcestershire FA and McDonald's community project of the year award for 2017.

They played in the Diamond Tournament at St George's Park last year and have previously been shortlisted for other accolades.
