WORCESTER’S Trent Smith has been crowned Midlands schoolboy champion.

Smith, 13, defeated Sam Brookhouse from Walsall Wood in the class one 40kgs bout at the regional finals in Coventry.

The Blessed Edward Oldcorne Catholic College pupil, part of the city’s amateur boxing club, wasted no time in putting his jab to work and soon built up a 4-0 lead during the early stages of the contest.

The sharper punching came from the Worcester boxer but, as the bout progressed, Brookhouse narrowed the gap to only two points.

Smith recorded an 8-6 victory after dictating the pace and using his jab to good effect in the final round.

He now faces the North East champion in Yorkshire for a place in the semi-finals.
