BOXING fans beware, there is a storm warning for the Bolton area this weekend.

That is because Worcester Amateur Boxing Club starlet Trent ‘Hurricane’ Smith will be heading to the north-west town for the semi-final of the English Schoolboy Championships.

The Spetchley 13-year-old, who is a massive Ricky Hatton fan, is determined to build on his convincing quarter-final victory and has his sights set on being crowned national champion.

If the youngster could go on to win in the final, he would become Worcester’s first junior national champion for 23 years since Wayne Clayton claimed the title.

Trent’s father, Bobs Smith, will be accompanying his son to the semi-finals and believes his son deserves success.

He said: “Trent wants to represent Great Britain in the future but, at the moment, he just wants to be English national champion — he is very dedicated and determined. His attitude is spot on, I am very proud of him.

“He says he doesn’t care who he is up against in the semi-final, because he has to beat everyone to win the title. He takes after his uncle Richard, who were senior Natal champions back in South Africa.”

Born in South Africa, talented sportsman Trent moved to Worcester with his family as a three-and-a-half year old.

He regularly trains six days a week at Worcester ABC in Vincent Road and maintains a strict diet to keep his weight at the 40kg level.

Mr Smith added: “I look after his diet and he monitors his weight closely.

“He loves KFC, but knows he cant have it until after the semi-finals in Bolton.

“When he won in the quarter-finals, we had a bit of a family party and we got some KFC in, but he said he wouldn’t have any until after the national championships have finished.

“He is a talented all-round sportsman. He was at Walsall Football Club’s centre of excellence, had county rugby trials at Sixways and attained a karate purple belt.”

The Smith family are now hoping to attract sponsorship to help Trent continue his development so that he can achieve his dream of representing Great Britain.
