Smikle praises his two bosses

BRIAN Smikle has set his sights on bagging 15 goals for Kidderminster Harriers this season.

The in-form left winger is already the Aggborough club’s leading marksman with 12 and is on course to reach his target as Steve Burr’s side continue their push for Blue Square Premier and FA Trophy success.

Harriers entertain Stevenage Borough in the FA Trophy semi-final first leg today (3pm) and Smikle is relishing the chance to improve on his tally.

He has also praised the efforts of both Burr and predecessor Mark Yates in making him into the player he has become.

Smikle, the only current Harriers player who featured in the 2007 final against Stevenage, said: “I think that Steve needs to take a lot of the credit over how well we are doing.

“He has come in to the club and given us all a lot of confidence.

“I have to credit Mark Yates as well — he gave me my chance and I managed to take it.

“I wasn’t playing very often when I first came to Kidderminster and for the first few seasons it was hard to get into a rhythm and my confidence was a bit low.

“I didn’t do as well as I had hoped when I first came to the club.

“But Mark gave me my chance at the start of the 2008-09 season and I wasn’t about to waste it.”

The 24-year-old wideman added: “Playing regularly helps and I’ve been able to score a few goals as well.

“I scored 10 last season and my aim this time was to grab 15.

“I’ve already beaten last season so I’m on track for my target. As long as we’re winning I don’t mind who’s scoring though.”
