HEREFORD United could be among a number of football clubs facing a drop in season ticket sales as the effects of the recession continue to be felt.
Football has not been immune to the economic downturn and many clubs have hit financial difficulties, with Portsmouth and Crystal Palace finding themselves in administration.
In the last week alone, Farsley Celtic have been wound-up, while fellow Blue Square Premier side Chester City were expelled from the division because of their grave financial problems.
Now figures from Virgin Money’s Football Fans’ Inflation Index show that one in four supporters may not renew their season tickets for the 2010/11 campaign in an effort to cut costs.
The number of season ticket holders at Hereford is around 1,000 and that makes up a sizeable chunk of the Edgar Street club’s income with attendances having struggled this term.
Fans may also wait to see whether they have a new manager in place before making their decision.
Graham Turner has returned to the dug-out following the departure of John Trewick and was in charge for last night’s League Two match at Lincoln City.
He has said he doesn’t expect to be in the position beyond the end of the current campaign, however, the vacancy is not likely to be advertised.
Hereford, though, will be keen to finish the season on a high note and retain as many season ticket holders as possible.
Virgin Money’s Grant Bather said: “The prospect of one in four season ticket holders giving up next season is a serious warning to clubs that fans need some support.”
